Andaman and nicobar islands – Trip guide

Andaman and nicobar islands is a tropical paradise, offering serene beautiful white sand beaches, water activities, marine life & crystal clear turquoise waters. Andaman honeymoon package would be a memorable trip for your life time.

Port Blair, the capital of andaman and nicobar is generally used as a base city with Veer Savarkar International Airport (Code: IXZ) and also to catch ferries to nearby islands. Tourists also spend a day or two here to explore the town and nearby beaches. You can take day trips to Ross Island and North Bay Island or Baratang and Jolly Buoy island from Port Blair.

Andaman nicobar have the most exotic beaches. Water sports such as Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Sea Walk etc are the highlights you can try in your andaman tour packages. North Bay Island near Port Blair, Elephant Beach in Havelock Island and Bharatpur Beach in Neil Island are three popular beaches to try out watersports. Scuba diving can explored in Havelock or Neil Island.

Andaman trip guide is special to me as I have spend many months, in detailed research before planning the andaman nicobar trip and it resulted in a great and pleasant trip. I would like to share all the experiences, Info’s and tips so that you have a detailed Andaman trip planner. Hope my detailed Andaman trip plan will help you plan an amazing trip to Andaman. I have mentioned a short 4-5 days itinerary for a romantic Andaman honeymoon package too. How much would the Andaman trip cost is always a major question in our mind. I have covered Andaman trip cost in detail in this blog.

Please read the blog till end, as I had prepared day by day Andaman and nicobar islands trip itinerary at the end & also important tips in respective sections.

how to plan andaman trip without package? How to plan andaman trip on your own? Should we go through any travel agency?

We all have this question in our mind before planning. Can we plan an Andaman and nicobar islands trip by ourselves? Or should we go through any tour operator?

We can also plan Andaman by ourselves by planning well in advance, reading and exploring lots of information about stays, places, transportation etc. If you would like to just enjoy the trip without much tension and worries about executing the trip, last minute cancellation of stays etc, I would suggest best would be to book a best Andaman tour package

From our personal trip experience, we have curated a nice Andaman tour package to experience the best of Andamans

Advantages of booking with us :

  • Best rated stays by travellers across travel portals like Booking.com, Google, Tripadvisor etc
    • No hidden clauses like XY stay OR similar. Will be sharing the exact stay details once you book the package.
    • We have selected best resort stays in good locations and also with with lesser number of rooms, to make your experience and customer service better
    • Big stays are generally tied with big travel companies, which would make it very crowded place, thus leading to less customer satisfaction
  • Fine tuned itinerary based on personal travel experience, so that good time to relax with your loved ones.
  • Airport pick-up to airport drop ( full package )
  • Private ferry transfers + Private car for sightseeing
  • Local contacts in each island for hassle free experience
  • We explain all details and make sure you won’t miss out must experiences in Andaman
  • Flexible cancellation
  • All activities like Scuba diving can be arranged for best price
  • No strict rules with itinerary.
  • We can accommodate requests as per your convenience on the trip days, unless it’s adding up much extra cost. But, trust me this is best possible itinerary based on personal travel experience 🙂

Why to settle with normal tour packages. experience the best of andamans with value for money packages
Check out my best value Andaman packages

I will put down the check list :

  1. Make a plan : Make a plan with Starting date to end end date.
  2. Book Flights : Book to and fro flights at-least 3-4 months in advance for best rates. We booked it for around 6-7k per person.
  3. Book ferries between Port blairHavelock Neil Islands well in advance. Ferry tickets can be booked online from GreenOcean official website. Keep checking the availability here. Ferry bookings are very important as this is the only means of transfer between the islands. There are 3 different types of seats Royal,Luxury & Economy. Please see the end of blog for Which seats to book in Green Ocean for best view and comfort.
You can consider Makruz also. As per the info from a localite, it seems to get cancelled often compared to green ocean in case of minor bad weather. Another cheap option is govt ferries which can be booked directly, if you can manage the rush and so.
  4. Book hotels for each destination according to your travel plan.In Andaman govt stays are well maintained and affordable. I will explain later here how to book through Andaman Official Website.
  5. Book Scuba Diving slot
  6. Book Local Transportation package : Most of the local transportation can be covered by 2 wheeler(you can get it for rent 500/day) if you are comfortable. If planning to book local transportation please sync with travel agent in advance and work out the transportation as per your requirements. For a family, I would suggest book local transportation in advance for hassle free pickups and drops. Will mention contact numbers later in the blog

Is Andaman open for tourists now ?

Yes

Best time to visit Andaman and nicobar islands :

  • The best time to visit the Andaman Islands is from mid-October to the end of March. Nov-Dec might have heavy rains too. Varies year to year
  • Season ideally begins at the end of September when the rains recede and generally dry weather continues on to May.
  • Tourists flock the island from November through February with clear skies and bearable heat.
  • Water activities remain open all through the year except in rare cases of cyclones and storms. The Sea Walk is suspended from mid-May until September.
  • Elephant Beach in the Havelock Island and some others remain inaccessible by boat during the monsoons.

To start with, Andaman is much more than just Havelock. We made sure to cover North Andaman via Barataang ( Limestone caves ), Rangat and Diglipur. Ross and Smith island in Diglipur was special experience for us. Also, we felt Neil island was more beautiful and untouched than Havelock and much cheaper for shopping.

Let me take you through detailed experiences of each destinations for you to explore.

Well planned trip special tips

  • Carry BSNL and Airtel SIMs
    • Mobile network is limited in Andaman. BSNL, Airtel & Vodafone in respective order have better networks.
  • As you will be doing water activities and spending time in beach, make sure to carry enough set of comfortable clothes for getting into water.
  • Sun rises very early around 5 AM & sets early around 5 PM. So please plan your days accordingly.
  • Make sure to carry pen drive for copying your photos & videos after snorkelling, Scuba etc
  • Plan for 2 days in Havelock & Neil if possible. It will be more comfortable and relaxing.
  • All items are cheaper in NEIL ISLAND. So consider buying items like wooden toys(fish, squirrel, key chains), Sea shells, t shirts etc all from NEIL.
  • There are only few ATMS on island & not necessary cash will be dispensed all the time & due to network issues card machines transactions are also not guaranteed, hence please carry sufficient cash during your travel.
  • Closed on Mondays
    • Cellular Jail, Baratang Limestone caves, Jolly Buoy
  • It is very important to keep buffer day before return flight, in case of any ferry cancellations. Indigo rescheduled our flight for free. But even with the order released from Andaman government authorities, other airlines like GoAir, AirIndia etc didn’t accept any re scheduling requests and lot of passengers had to re book flights for very high prices.

For a hassle free experience, it would be more comfortable to have cabs arranged for sightseeing.

IT`S A HANDY GUIDE WITH EVERY DETAILS REQUIRED FOR A SOLO AS WELL AS TO OTHER TOURISTS.PLEASE TELL ME IF I CAN COMBINE TRIP TO ROSE ISLAND AND LIGHT AND SOUND SHOW TO GETHER IN THE EVENING AS A SINGLE TRIP AND HOW MANY DAYS BEFORE A TICKET CAN BE BOOKED ON LINE AND FERRYS TO HAVALOCK AND NEIL.PLEASE MAIL ME BACK AS I AM VISITING PORT BLAIR THIS NAVEMBER FROM 7 TH TO 14TH FOR WHICH I HAVE ALREADY BOOKED PLANE TICKTS THANKS

    1. Rajesh

      Hi,
Thanks. Glad that you found it helpful.
Rose Island is port blair in different and Ross & Smith Island in Diglipur is different. The pics you see in my blog is of Diglipur Ross &Smith.
Ross Island and Jail show could be done together i guess. Do Ross island afternoon and be back by evening. Book for a night show, then you will have ample time.
Ross island has some historic remains of buildings. So if you are interested in historic things you might enjoy. Else, if you can consider jollybouy island, it has much more good view and also water sports.
Regarding ferry booking it depends upon the season i feel. Please keep checking the https://tickets.greenoceanseaways.com/portal. It was around 1 or 2 months before, when i booked.

      Thanks,
      Rajesh

    Hi Rajesh
I am trying to plan for a 6 day 5 nights at Andaman what would be your suggestion on places if i need to cover Digalpur limestone caves also

    1. Rajesh

      Hi Sugosh,
Baratang (Limestone caves ) is a full day trip from Port blair. You have to start early morning inorder to manage the forest entry timings.
From there to Diglipur, it is a long journey again.
So if you want to cover Baratang (Limestone caves ) and Diglipur (Ross and smith Island, which is the best place i visited in Andaman), it would take 3 days
      Day 1 : Baratang, Stay
      Day 2: Diglipur, Stay
Day 3: Return to port blair, full day drive
Total trip cost was around 15000 for an Maruti Ertigo (Dec 2018)

Day3: Sunrise @Kalapathar Beach+ scuba and noon move to Neil. Sunset @Laxmanpur beach +Natural bridge
Day4: Sunrise @Sitapur, Bharatpur beach water activities+ Natural rock formation+ shopping
Day5: reach Port Blair by noon. Local Port Blair (cover which was not done on day1)
Day6: Move to Baratang Island seeing Jarawa Tribe + Limestobe caves +Mangrove forest rest at hotel
Day7: reach Port Blair by noon. local sight seeing
    Day8 : Flight back home.

Let me know if this is good with children aged 6yr n 4yr. Also need some help in travel part. The above number is not reachable

  13. Sam

    Hi Rajesh,

Thanks for such a detailed information. I am also planning to visit Andaman and Nicobar Islands with my spouse in coming January. Our flight is scheduled to arrive at Port Blair at around noon on 23rd Jan and departure is also from Port Blair on 30 Jan around noon. Though I looked at your itinerary, could you please let me know the following:
    1. Should we book and keep our luggage/belongings at one place/hotel/home_stay in Port Blair and tour around the islands or should we always take them with us while going from one island to another ?
    2. At which islands and its respective resort/hotel/home_stay should we do the bookings for staying and for how many days on each place?
    Many Thanks in Advance!

    Best Regards,
    Sam

    1. Rajesh

      Hi Sam,
Glad that the blog was helpful.
      Please find answers :
      1. Main Islands are port blair, havelock and Neil. While just going to sight seeing, islands like barataang, jollybouy from portblair(day tours), you can keep luggage in port blair hotel. While going to Havelock and Neil its better to take luggage with you in ferry.
      2. I had mentioned the stay, how to book details for havelock, Neil and Port blair. Please refer to the blog.
I would suggest 2 days in Havelock and 2 days in Neil and the remaining in port blair. Please keep a buffer day in port blair before return flight, as a buffer in case of any bad weather situations.
      Hope it helps.
      Thanks,
      Rajesh

      1. Sam

        Hi Rajesh,

Could you please suggest which places should I visit, as my travel plan is as follows:
(I have tried to follow your suggestion of spending 2 days in Havelock, 2 days in Neil and the remaining 3 days(in parts) in Port Blair):
        1. 30 and 31 January – Port Blair (Andaman Castle)
        2. 01 and 02 February – Havelock (White Coral Bach Resort) (I got 12.30 ferry to reach Havelock at 2 pm on 1st Feb).
        3. 03 and 04 February – Neil island (COCONHUTS) (Will reach at around 9.00 am on 3rd Feb)
        4. 05 February – Back to Port Blair (at around 11:30 AM) – Yet to book hotel, so please suggest.
        5. 06 February – Early morning return flight.
Also, will it be fine to book some sightseeing package in Port Blair and rent a two-wheeler for touring both Havelock and Neil islands?
And could you also suggest something about hiring a photographer (for getting our pics at all the locations) and cruise ship dinner or candle light dinner at either of the islands
        Waiting eagerly for your response.

        Best Regards,
        Sam

        1. Rajesh

          Hi Sam,

(Jolly Bouy Island + Jail and Light and sound show)
          31 January

North Bay & Ross Island(remains of history) if have time n interested

          01 – Havelock
          RadhaNagar Beach(Sun set)
          02 February
SCUBA(morning slot around 8 am is the best time for good visibility)
Afternoon : Snorkeling, water sports @ Elephant Beach / enjoy the evening in resort.

Sitapur Beach (Sun rise) + Natural Bridge

05 February – Back to Port Blair
Local sight seeings like sagarika emporium,Anthropology Museum etc if interested

          In Port blair –

          +91 7063945300,+91 9531913230

renting a two-wheeler for touring both Havelock and Neil islands are cool. You will find many options for 500/day

For private candle light dinner I found this option good, rather than spending on luxury resort:
          http://bit.ly/35T9dA1

Not sure about photographer. You can check with stay. They might be able to refer. Or try searching options in internet with good reviews

  14. nivedhana

    Hey Rajesh,

Your blog gave clear picture abt the place.. Thank you so much. Initially we thought to book as package which went upto 46 to 60k but i guess we can plan our own itinerary. We are a family of 4 (kids age is 8 and 1). Our tickets have been booked, will land early morning(6.30) on 14th Feb and departure is on 19th(7.15am). Can you help me with booking the stay and sightseeing. We do not want very expensive stay but a place where childrens need can be managed.

    Below is my Plan

Day 1 (14th)- Arrive at the hotel and Rest for sometime and head to Ross island as it has friendly deer and peacock for the kids to see, Arrive back to Port blair and attend the Light Show in the eve. (Can i include the museum and marine park).
Day 2 (15th)- Head to Havelock in the morning. Check in and head to Elephanta Beach for activities and the in the evening Radhanagar beach.
Day 3 (16th) – Kalapathar and Scuba if my hubby wishes to. (If you want u can include anything )
Day 4(17th) – Head to Niel island -Bharatpur Beach for Activities+ Natural Bridge
Day 5(18th – Need help as nt sure we will get time to watch Sun rise and Sun sets with kids or (head to Port Blair)
Day 6()19th) – Morning Flight to Chennai

    1. Rajesh

      Hi Nivedhana,
Glad that the blog was helpful enough to plan your own trip.
Booking stay : Please refer to each section Havelock,Neil and Port Blair. I have suggested my stays with pics.
Booking sight seeing : Please get in touch with Nasir(SUNNYVALE Homestay) : +91 7063945300
+91 9531913230. He will help you arranging the same.

Day 1 : For visiting jail you need to reach before 5 pm. Light show you can do by late too.
Ross Island would be a half day trip. As sun would set early in Andaman this time around 5 pm, you can plan other sight seeing if you have enough time. (For beauty, I would suggest Jollybouy. You would also get water activities)
      Day 2: Looks fine
Day 3: Try beginner scuba. Its worth the experience. Please refer to scuba details in blog.
Day 4 : Bharatpur Beach is ok ok. If u want to do water activities you can go.
Day 5 : Sitapur Beach (Sun rise) and Laxmanpur beach (Sun set) are nice and less crowded. Even if u miss sunrise/set try not to miss.
Laxmanpur beach you can swim in the first entry point.

  15. Richa

Planning a trip with a 6month old baby in early april..plz suggest if april is a good time to visit andaman..thanks

    1. Rajesh

      Hi Richa,
It would be a good time to visit. The weather is pleasant and sunny and the sea is calm.
summers (March to May) are warm but pleasant with sea breeze and have humidity level about 80%. It is suitable for all kinds of tourist activities.
      Thanks,
      Rajesh

  16. Vivek

    Hello Bro,
Very helpful post, you’re the best. I’ve some queries regarding my upcoming honeymoon trip. Please give your suggestions
    1. Are hotels you mentioned good for honeymoon stay ? ( Privacy, service and trust. ) What if we want to add romantic things like candle light dinner etc. ?
    2. Which places can we drop for relaxed schedule ?
    3. Which are romantic, lonely and serene places for couple ( except Ross & smith, as you’ve mentioned it already )

    1. Rajesh

      Hi Bro,
      Thanks for that lovely comment.
      1. Hotels were best options in Havelock(Dolphin resort -It has a private beach area) and Neil(Coconhut – Also has a little private beach area(cant swim)). Regarding candle light dinner -> in Dolphin on request they would provide i guess. You can call and check this. Basically they would provide a setup in the table in restaurant. If you are expecting something in beach side candle light dinner, would not be possible i guess. You might need check out more expensive options may be.
      2. Baratang day trip is little tiring. If you want relaxed trip, it can be dropped.
Also filter sight seeing in port Blair(ross island and chidiyatapu can be skipped) according to your interest.
Havelock – Kalapathar can be skipped
      3. I would suggest Neil for your requirement. Sitapur and Laxmanpur beaches are less crowdy, romantic, lonely and serene 🙂 Hope it helps 🙂
Enjoy your wellplannedtrip to Andaman 🙂 Stay tuned and subscribed to my youtube channel also : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyesd4SzUz_AupuOGWx3L3w

  18. Priyabrata

Hi Rajesh, I really liked your blog on the Andaman… really appreciate the minute details you have covered here. Can you please tell me how I can go to North Bay and Ross Island from Port Blair in boat ? I mean how I can get the boat tickets in port Blair jetty ? Can I get on the day of travel ? If yes, do I need to go early in morning to book the boats ? Thank you.

      Hi Priyabrata,
Thanks for your feedback. Glad that the blog was helpful.

First we need to reach the boat jetty by land and then boat trip accordingly.
Making bookings is simple actually. There is a tourism office in port blair: Tourist Information Center.

You can take an Auto rickshaw there. They are very helpful and will give you all the information you need. You can also book tickets from there for the light shows and travel to the other islands like Ross Island, jolly bouy etc.
Or it can be taken from Aberdeen Jetty (Rajiv Gandhi water sports complex). And it’s not very expensive either 🙂

full day ferry trip to Ross Island and North Bay Island combined trip. Will cost you around 600Rs per seat in boat and will take you to Ross Island and then North Bay Island.

Ross Island is abandoned place, remaining of history and scenic can do photography there.

North Bay Island is good to Swim and for Coral Reef and Snorkeling etc. If you are doing snorkeling and scuba, sea walk will not excite you much.
I would suggest : Snorkelling (Elephant beach) & Scuba (Havelock – as mentioned in blog)

I would recommend Jollybouy if you are mainly looking for water sports in port Blair.

Or just request your stay in port blair, they would be able to arrange or help too.
      Hope it helps 🙂

    Hi Rajesh,

Is passport required for Andaman trip? Can you please let me know if we can travel from Chennai to Andaman with only Aadhar and PAN as ID proof , without passport? It’s not required in airport either. Is that correct?

    1. Rajesh

      Hi Varsha,

No. Passport is not required for Andaman. Its not required in airports too. Just have any identity proof and tickets.

Thank you so much Rajesh !! For your prompt reply and for the very detailed blog.. I have planned my trip according to the iternary that you have provided , so thanks a lot!!
By the way, one clarification. I have booked ferries just as you have mentioned. So I have a confusion in hotel check-in and check-out. Since I will be leaving Havelock to Neil island by 2:30 pm ferry, I can check out only at 12 pm right.. but none of the hotels show that option. Can you please help me more on that?

    1. Rajesh

      Hi Varsha,
Glad that the blog was helpful to you and wish you well planned trip to Andaman. Enjoy 🙂
Generally, check out time is 11 or 12 as mentioned by the hotel. You can request them for extension, but expect may be max around 1 hour if they accept.
As we did scuba diving on the morning, we checked out morning and Dolphin resort was kind enough to arrange a temporary room for freshening up after we returned from Scuba. Please check with the respective hotel and plan accordingly.

      Hi Bro,
It would be a good time to visit. The weather is pleasant and sunny and the sea is calm.
summers (March to May) are warm but pleasant with sea breeze and have humidity level about 80%. It is suitable for all kinds of tourist activities.
Glad that you liked the blog and it was helpful

    Hi Rajesh,
thanks for writing such a beautiful blog on Andaman. I have to plan a trip in April end or May first week after my marriage. Is it worth to go andaman or i should go for Bali.
    Please suggest me something.

    1. Rajesh

Andaman is definitely beautiful and you can enjoy the trip if you plan well. For honeymoon, try to avoid crowded places, sight seeings etc. Get good resorts and relax in private beaches. Dolphin resort would be great. candle light dinner in beach side, check out : http://bit.ly/35T9dA1
Neil would be less crowded. Give more days in Neil, havelock,Port blair order

Haven’t been to Bali so cant compare. Guess both are beautiful on their own ways. Do one now and the other on 1st anniversary. How about that 🙂

    Hi,
I have read most of the blogs about Andaman on your page.
Nice detailed write-up, thanks a lot for the same.
One question wrt timing – I see Jan 2nd 3rd week flight tickets Bangalore to Port Blair are cheaper compared to Feb and early march? Why is like this? Though Jan is also good time to visit Andaman, any particular reason?

Also I have kind of made itinerary based on your blog as well other information, I am thinking of skipping North bay island and Ross island on Port blair – thinking it will be crowded and not very much to offer compared to Havelock and Neil, we are planning – 1N PB, 2N Havelock, 2N Neil, 1N PB and then back to bangalore in 7 days 6 nights trip.

    Thanks
    Deepak

Thank you Deepak for reaching out. Glad that the blog and details was helpful for you.
I am not particularly aware about this difference of flight rates. If you are getting good prices for Jan, grab it 🙂 Because Jan,feb are the peak seasons in general and good time to visit.
      Regarding plan :
It looks good. You are right. Havelock and Neil 2 days each is a good choice.

I have started curating Andaman trips to help travelers, so please let me know if you need help with package
From my personal experience, I can give package rates with more value for money compared to the actual expense I spend planning myself.
      Advantages :
Symphony resort chain stays (Leading resort chain in Andaman)
Hassle free Private A/C cab arrangements for sightseeing and Airport pickups
      Private ferry transfer tickets
Covering all important places in itinerary.

Please reach out to me. Will be happy to help you with all details.
